Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") is a complete FREE Web Authoring System that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web page editing.
Nvu is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.
Is it as good as Frontpage and Dreamweaver?
FrontPage and Dreamweaver are popular HTML editors for MS Windows. These programs have become popular because they make web design extremely easy, even for non-technical people. Nvu contains many of the same easy-to-use features which makes these programs so popular.
I've used Nvu for some time. I use Dreamweaver also, so I am able to compare the two.
For a FREE web authoring system Nvu is brilliant.
Easy to use without HTML knowledge
I have very little knowledge of HTML, so using web authoring programs which give me a "What You See Is What You Get" interface is essential.
Nvu displays the pages you are creating in either "normal mode" (which is how the page will really look when published, as picture below shows), "source mode" which gives you the your page as it is in HTML, or in "HTML Tags mode", which displays the page as it is in normal mode, but includes visually all the "tags" on the page such as image tags, text tags, heading tags etc.
FTP site manager
With Nvu, all the sites you have specified in your Publishing Settings become browseable in a sidebar. You can get a tree view of a site, or a one-dir-only view. It is also possible to filter files and show all files, or only HTML documents or image files. The browsing area also allows to show for each file its size and the date of last modification.
A new color picker
Nvu has a new extended colorpicker. Set a color from its red blue and green components, or its hue saturation and brightness. Or just use your mouse to pick up the color you want.
One of Mozilla Firefox's fantastic features is available in Nvu! Have one window only on your screen and edit several documents at once, each document having its own Undo/Redo stack! Just glance at the tabs to know if a document needs to be saved or not!
Create stylesheets easily and manage the styles attached to your documents. You can see your style settings applied '"live" to the document you're editing.
Customize your toolbar and show only the buttons you want/need. And if you really want more buttons than your screen's width can contain, just create a new toolbar.
Take advantage from a XUL-based UI to edit all your forms, and edit all your form elements.
Table/Cell resizing rulers
On the left and top side of the opened tab you will find the convenient table resizing rulers which will help you easily adjust the size of rows and columns in any table in the web page you design.
The integrated in-line spellchecker will underline all misspelled words as you type to ensure correct spelling throughout the entire web page.
